When it comes to buying one of the best quality yogurts in the country, without a single doubt, Chobani is a world-famous name in that regard. You must have tried their different kinds of yogurt offerings by now, and if not, well, you must have at least seen a lot of their products in your nearby supermarket. Correct? Well, that’s just because Chobani has the image of providing those all-natural and healthy yogurt options. But in some recent cases, we came to find out that they got in trouble for advertising in such a way. Actually, they labeled one of their products as “Zero Sugar,” and that became a whole legal drama, which we now know as the Chobani Yogurt Lawsuit
The “Zero Sugar” Lawsuit (2021-2025)
The cases were centered on accusations against Chobani for misleading the customers about its yogurts of the type with a label called “Zero Sugar.” Customers thought that “Zero Sugar” meant absolutely no sweeteners, whereas allulose was, anyway, some kind of sugar sweetener. That’s why you should not buy such food products by just taking a quick look at what is written on the front label of the product; always check the back ingredient list. That’s the part where you’ll find out what you’re really buying.
So what exactly is allulose? It is a sweetener found in several fruits, such as figs and raisins. Because it tastes like sugar, it is assumed to behave like sugar inside; on the contrary, allulose has very few calories, it does not significantly increase blood sugar levels, and it is also not bad for the teeth. The plaintiffs still argued that it should not be called “Zero Sugar” if it is a sweetener.
Because Chobani resisted by pointing out that the FDA had approved allulose as a non-sugar ingredient, whereby a company can advertise its products as “Zero Sugar” on their labels. In May 2025, an Illinois judge dismissed the lawsuit, thus verifying that Chobani had followed the labeling requirements. The lawsuit ended in Chobani’s favor, with no fines attached.
The Toxic Chemicals Lawsuit (2023 To Present)
Second, a more serious case emerged. During 2023, a particular plaintiff, from California, filed a lawsuit alleging the presence of phthalates in Chobani’s plain Greek yogurt. These were chemicals often used in plastics, and over the years, they leached into the food.
Phthalates are defined as harmful because they disrupt hormones and have been linked with adverse health conditions such as cancer, respiratory problems, and developmental concerns. The lawsuit and its basis are that Chobani advertised its products as having “only natural ingredients” while selling yogurts with chemicals in them.
It’s not just one person complaining: it’s a class-action lawsuit. This means that anyone who bought the said kind of yogurt in the United States can join the case. The plaintiffs want Chobani to have to pay customers, admit that the problem existed, and revise the packaging so as to prevent any contamination. The case is a continuing one with the settlement yet to be agreed upon as of 2025.
Comparing the Two Cases
The so-called “Zero Sugar” case was about labeling and whether sweeteners such as allulose are considered sugars. The case was won by Chobani in 2025 since the Food and Drug Administration regulations supported their label. Like, sure, they did not use any regular sugar in their product, so their claim was accurate, but people thought that it would not be as sweet as other products in the market, but that wasn’t the case. It was just a replacement for sugar, and that’s all!
This toxic chemical lawsuit is much more troubling. First, it deals with issues of health risk and product safety, not just mere marketing. So, if Chobani loses this case, there may be serious damages to the tune of money and reputation.
